This Baoli is a 60-meter long and 15-meter wide historical step well on Hailey Road, near Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

This Baoli is definitely an architectural marvel of ancient India. It is a three-story Baoli with 108 steps leading up to the well. The material used in the construction of Agrasen ki Baoli is lime plaster and boulders.

Delhi once had more than 100 step wells.  But nowadays there are only around 10 left. “Agrasen ki Baoli” is one of them.

There are no known historical records related to the construction of the era and the name of the constructor of this Baoli. It is believed by the public that it was built by the great king Agrasen (Ugrasen) of the Mahabharata period. Its repair work was done in the 14th century by the Agrawal community who are known to be the descendants of Maharaja Agrasen. That is why the signs of current architecture are found during the Tughlaq period in the 14th century.

Agrasen ki Baoli was not only a water reservoir but also had its social and religious importance as a community site. The arched cubicles of Baoli were also used for various Hindu religious functions and ceremonies.

Agrasen’s Baoli is one of the top haunted sites in India. Some people say that they have heard strange and scary voices from inside the Baoli.

There are so many horror myths about this Baoli. According to a popular myth, there is some hypnotic power in the black water of Baoli. Hypnotized by the magical water of Baoli, people end their lives by jumping into the Baoli. When a person commits suicide by jumping into the Baoli, then the water level of this Baoli goes up. People say that one shouldn’t visit after dark.

We do not know how much truth is there in this horror story, but these days the well is almost dry. So far no reports of suicide have been received inside this well. According to official records, the last suicide attempt in this Baoli was done in 2007.

But It is difficult to believe this myth. Nowadays  Agrsenal ki Baoli is counted among the top haunted places in Delhi.
