Information about Jantar Mantar of Delhi
The main objective of the construction of this observatory was to predict time with accuracy and to track the motion of planets for accurate information of celestial bodies and celestial events.
This observatory was used to track the movements of the moon, sun, and other planets.
The Main 4 astronomical instruments
Jantar Mantar in Delhi consists of a total of 13 astronomical instruments which help in celestial predictions. The most important among them Yantra are, Mishra Yantra, Jayaprakash Yantra, Samrat Yantra, and Rama Yantra.
01. Samrat Yantra / Supreme Instrument
It is also called Supreme Instrument. It is 128 feet long, 70 feet high and 10 feet thick.
Samrat Yantra is basically a huge triangle that represents a sundial. It is the World’s Largest Sundial.
It moves parallel to the Earth’s axis, pointing to the North Pole of earth. On either side of it shows hours, seconds, and minutes. It was the most unique device of that time because it had the amazing feature of announcing celestial bodies.
02. Jayaprakash Yantra
It was used to align the exact position of the stars with different markings. It has a hollow hemisphere with its concave body withdrawn signs and attached crosswords.
03. Mishra Yantra
It was used to determine the shortest and longest days of the year. It was a great tool because it could easily determine the longest and shortest days of the year of various cities and places in the country. By its use, the afternoon time in various cities around the world can be accurately noted.
04. Ram yantra
It is two large cylindrical models with an open-upper surface. This instrument was used to measure the height of the planets based on the position of the Earth.
Note: Nowadays many tall buildings are built around the Jantar Mantar of Delhi, so it stopped giving accurate figures.

Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur built this observatory in 1724. Maharaja Jai Singh II built a total of 5 observatories in different parts of the country. All these observatories are located in Jaipur, Delhi, Ujjain, Varanasi, and Mathura. The observatory located in Jaipur is the largest.
